Tunsgate Guildford

Tunsgate Quarter

Guildford, Surrey

The project has delivered the expansion and reinvention of Tunsgate Shopping Centre, an ageing retail centre on Guildford High Street. The revitalised scheme creates 110,000 sq ft leisure and shopping destination transforming the centre into a distinctive restaurant and café quarter.

Reinventing the Centre

The Guildford High Street entrance is enhanced by opening up the existing facade to expose the mall as a street of its own, and create high profile restaurant space above. The scheme has solved the difficult changes in level and relationships between shops and outside streets by significantly altering the vertical layering of accommodation. New connections between retail space and Tunsgate at street level, together with re-building of upper levels has created a 3-level atrium from the original square and also opened up a large amount of new frontage onto Castle Street.

Benefits

The creation of a spacious third floor level houses The Ivy Restaurant, Guildford which capitalises on newly created views over Guildford's Norman Castle. Vertical circulation throughout has been improved by the elimination of stepped entrances, and the connection of all levels with the centre's basement car park with new lifts and feature stairs.

Existing residential space above the centre has been reconfigured to provide 14 apartments with sweeping views over Guildford and the Surrey Hills beyond.

Key retail occupiers include OKA, White Company with restaurants including The Ivy and Cosy Club.
